Inquiry Question: Why do states create alliances with each other?

Activity: Alliance Mind Mapping

The system of alliances before WWI can be thought of as a complex web of relationships. To help you understand these relationships we will create mind maps to visualize the alliances. There is also an example below to get you started and to give you an idea of what I am thinking of.

Use the exceprt from The First World War: A Very Short Introduction to help you map out the two competing alliance systems.

Use a sheet of A3 paper and divide it in half; one for the Triple Alliance and the other for the Triple Entente.

Write the names of the following countries and put them on the correct side; Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Britain, France, Italy and Belgium.

Draw lines between the countries that had an alliance or agreement with each other and write the name of the agreement (e.g. Entente Cordiale)

Identify in a couple sentences why each alliance/agreement was created.
